UFC Fight Night: Brunson vs Shahbazyan Predictions

The UFC is back at the Apex and is full steam ahead after a successful venture to Yas Island, and It's quite fitting that in the final fight in Abu Dhabi we witnessed the "apex" of the Middleweight division square off while tonight we have the future of the division on display. Also, this card features an interesting co-main that sees one fighter risking a title shot to stay active, let's get to the predictions shall we!

Derek Brunson vs Edmen Shahbazyan

In a quest to become the UFC's youngest champion of all-time, the highly touted youngster Shahbazyan takes on the hardend vet Derek Brunson, and really this is one of those fights of little consequence. I mean at this point does a win over Brunson mean much anymore? His career is defined by his losses, and if Edmen were to lose, an early loss on your resume isn't such a bad thing in MMA. So the stakes are quite low in this fight.

Was that last paragraph as stupid as I think it was? Yeah, probably, BUT when it comes down to brass tax this is a good test for Edmen as he works his way up the ladder. A lot of pressure on a young fighter here, but I think he rises to the occasion against a guy known for doing the opposite.

Prediction: Edmen Shahbazyan, Decision

Joanne Calderwood vs Jennifer Maia

Oh Joanne, why are you doing this to yourself? All signs pointed towards a title fight for the Scot, but instead "Jojo" opted for a really tough fight in Jennifer Maia. This is a really close matchup, both of their last losses came against the same woman (Chookagian), and both don't have much in their arsenal's that the other doesn't possess.

This is going to be a razor close decision, but I'll go with the lady who is ready to risk it for the biscuit.

Prediction: Joanne Calderwood, Decision

Randy Brown vs Vicente Luque

Can we just say that at 6'3 with a 78 inch reach Brown is a freak for this division, and can we also say that Brown really knows how to use his frame to his advantage, but with all of that said this is a really tough fight for "Rude Boy". Everywhere Brown loves to fight Luque also thrives, everything that Brown does well one could say that Luque does just as good and has done it against better competition.

So this is really a big "if' of a fight for Brown, because everything in my mind leans Luque, plus I just haven't seen enough from Brown to suggest that he's quite ready to take out a guy like "The Silent Assassin". All the signs are there, might as well play it safe.

Prediction: Vicente Luque, Decision

Bobby Green vs Lando Vannata

This right here, THIS is the fight I'm looking most forward to watching. Both guys have unique styles, both guys come to fight, and both guys are just interesting characters all around. Lando has more in the bag which i think will ultimately separate the two, but he also has a tendency to get hit and Green is one of the slickest boxers in the game. Love this matchup.

Prediction: Lando Vannata, Decision

Trevin Giles vs Kevin Holland

Kevin vs Trevin, gotta love this matchup. Giles is what baseball fans like to call a "post-hype" type guy. He had massive amounts of hype put upon him due to his ability to knock guys into the next century, but after being exposed in back-to-back fights, and a close victory against James Krause who had one days notice to fight, Giles' hype is all but gone, but he is still a very dangerous fight.

I gotta say though that Holland is a terrible matchup for him. Holland won't stand and bang and won't hesitate to take it to the ground, however, coming off a big win via early stoppage Holland just might be tempted to recapture that rush, but I doubt it.

Prediction: Kevin Holland, 2nd RD SUB
