Well here we go again, three cards in a span of a week and I for one am very much okay with it. On Wednesday we saw an absolute demolition of Anthony Smith, it was so bad his corner caught ALL the heat (and for good reason), so much so I think it overshadowed the dominance that the now 40-year old Glover Teixeira displayed. What they do with that division is anyone's guess, but goddamn what a performance.
UFC Fight Night: Harris vs Overeem will have some very emotional undertones to it as it's the first time Walt Harris fights since the tragic passing of his stepdaughter. I imagine that will be focused on heavily throughout the broadcast tonight.
Walt Harris vs Alistair Overeem
Man, what an emotionally night this must be for Harris. I don't want to overstate the obvious but I know a lot of people will be pulling for him after what his family has gone through. With that said he comes into this as the favourite against "The Reem", and for good reason. Harris hasn't lost a fight in three years (No, I'm not counting his NC against Arlovski) and his last two fights he's laid waste to some pretty stiff competition, he's coming in in top form.
Overeem is coming off a pretty tough loss and has been stopped by strikes 14 times in his career, I don't like his odds against of staying awake against Harris. Tonight we feast on tainted horse meat!
Prediction: Walt Harris, 2nd RD TKO
Claudia Gadelha vs Angela Hill
Hill is quickly becoming the Donald Cerrone of women's MMA. She fought four times last year and is already on fight number three this year, and it's interesting to point out that she hasn't had a win streak of this kind since her days in Invicta, So she has earned this step up in the competition. With that said though, Gadelha is by far her biggest test to date.
This fight has all the makings of a Fight of the Night bonus. Both ladies are gamers, both are willing to go to the deep end of the pool to get the biscuit (that analogy makes no sense but I'm going with it) but something tells me Hill is finally ready to make that big push.
Prediction: Angela Hill, Decision
Dan Ige vs Edson Barbosa
After a razor close SD loss to Paul Felder and slip in the rankings at lightweight, Barboza has decided he longer wants to be a gatekeeper at 155 and would like to be a gatekeeper at 145. The Brazilian asked for a release from the UFC in March, he changed divisions because lightweight was "boring", I'm starting to question this mans sanity lol.
Ige has been an absolute bulldog since losing his UFC debut, a 5-fight win streak, a close one came against Bektic, his career seems to be trending upwards. I'm gonna take the surging underdog in this fight.
Prediction: Dan Ige, Decision
Eryk Anders vs Krzystof Jotko
I have absolutely no clue what's going to happen in this fight. It's the first time both men are fighting this year, both guys are riding a win streak, and both had to take steps back after falling flat facing better competition at 185.
I'll go with Anders because he spells Eric weird.
Prediction: Eryk Anders, Decision
Song Yadong vs Marlon Vera
This fight seems to be in murky waters. Uriah Faber weighed in yesterday as Song's backup due to Visa issues. Till this moment we have no clue who's fighting. Although if this fight is a go then it will be a barnburner. Song has the power, Vera has the grappling. Both guys are coming in on a tear so hopefully things can come together.
It is interesting to note that Faber weighed in at 153.5 and didn't make the 145 limit, again not sure how this will all play out but if it turns out to be Vera vs Faber it should still shape out to be a solid bout.
Predictions: Song vs Vera, Song via Decision. Vera vs Faber, Vera via 2nd RD TKO
