Straight out of the frying pan and into the fire, the UFC's hope to make money is its number one desire. That's right I'm a natural MC, but I'm also well aware of the success the UFC had this past weekend with UFC 249 despite concerns of COVID. By all accounts though things went smoothly thus opening the door for a 3 event week and boy aren't we lucky!
UFC Jacksonville: Smith vs Teixeira is the first of two cards this week and is most definitely the weakest of the pair, but it's hump day and with the lack of humping going on in my life I'll take it!
Anthony Smith vs Glover Teixeira
On paper this fight seems fairly even, Glover is riding a 3-fight win streak, and although he got in trouble in both the Roberson and Cutelaba fights he pulled out the W, Smith Is also riding some momentum as well, 4-1 in his last 5 fights only losing to the king of the division but is coming off the biggest win of his career. So what gives? Smith can beat super meth heads and idk if Glover has that in him.
If there is one guy that just seems to overcome all odds its Glover, but with Smith at the peak of his powers it's hard to bet against him. I envision this to be a firefight from the get go, both men will be hurt, we'll get to marvel at their bravery, and we'll all go to bed happy seeing a TKO victory by Mr. Smith.
Prediction: Anthony Smith, 3rd TKO
Ovince Saint Preux vs Ben Rothwell
When I think of OSP I think about football. Damn I miss sports. Had to say it, but there is something about St. Preux that is fascinating, he has the most Von Flue finishes in UFC history and at one point was one of the UFC"s brightest rising stars, but that just isn't the case anymore. However, with a move up to Heavy maybe that resets his career for the better, although what a tough first outing in a new division.
Say what you want about Rothwell the guy is as crafty as they come. He himself is treading in one of the lower points of his career, and even though he's coming off a win I just don't see him being able to keep up with the more explosive OSP.
Prediction: Ovince Saint Preaux, Decision
Alexander Hernandez vs Drew Dober
Dober went into the the Haqparast fight looked at as somewhat of a stepping stone for the young German, but just over a minute in he proved he was much more. So that makes back-to-back quick knockouts for the man with arguably the squarest jaw in the UFC. Hernandez bounced back after a career defining loss against Cowboy with a snoozer. He'll look to liven this one up.
Tough one to call, I think at the ripe age of 31 Dober is catching his stride, and although Hernandez has all the measurables leaning in his favour, Dober brings a certain calmness that I think will bode well in a fight against such an explosive guy.
Prediction: Drew Dober, Decision
Ricky Simon vs Ray Borg
Ray Borg jumps up to 135 after a failed weight cut his last fight out, it's the 4th time he's missed weight in his time with the UFC, as a reward he gets the ultra tough Ricky Simon. Borg has won his last two bouts and Simon has lost his previous two, but Borg really hasn't looked the same since his fight with Mighty Mouse and I doubt that will change this time around.
Although Simon doesn't have quite the grappling pedigree Borg does I think size will make up for his short comings, I think he gets himself out of the mini slump he's been in lately.
Prediction: Ricky Simon, Decision
Andrei Arlovski vs Philipe Lins
Hopefully this one doesn't shit the bed, I don't think it will but it has all the hallmarks of a classic dud in the making. Lins is making his UFC debut and will likely carry some nerves into the fight and Arlovski's career has seen better days to say the least. Lins has stopped his last 4 opponents so that's that, and that alone will probably boost him to a victory.
Prediction: Philipe Lins, 1st RD TKO
Michael Johnson vs Thiago Moises
Johnson is 3-7 in his last 10 fights. With a loss here I don't know if the UFC can keep him around much longer, so I think he'll be in full desperation mode.
Prediction: Michael Johnson, Decision
