Davis Signs With Austin

Canadian wingers are flying off the shelves this week! Just two days removed from signing Jeff Hassler, the Austin Gilgronis locked up their second Canadian winger by signing Cole Davis! Davis is the third Canadian to join Sam Harris’ squad and in the official press release Davis cited Moe Abdelmonem as a big factor in his decision to sign with the Gilgronis.

The 23-year old Calgary Saints product has represented Canada in both sevens and the fifteen-a side game. Davis has earned five caps with the national XV squad, with all five of those caps coming in 2018. In his five games, Davis picked up two tries scoring against Brazil and Chile. For 2019, Davis transitioned to the sevens game and played in eight matches over two tournaments. The highlight of those matches was a two-try performance against Kenya in the opening match of the 2019 Sydney event.

Davis will join what has quickly become a deep group of wingers in Austin. Harris now has Davis, Hassler, Roderick Waters, and former All Black Frank Halai to choose from. Halai lived up to expectations in 2020 as he registered a team leading two tries in three games last season. He also racked up 255m carries and a team leading three line breaks. An early prediction would be that Halai and Hassler earn the starting 11 and 14 jerseys come March 20th, 2021.

Davis is an incredibly strong and powerful runner. If you would like to see him drag some poor defenders around the pitch, you can check out this highlight reel set to a fun techno version of the Killer’s When You Were Young.

With the Gilgronis addition of Davis, there are now 20 Canadians officially signed to teams south of the border. However, in the Gilgronis press release Harris was quoted saying “with four Canadians in the squad”. So far, the Gilgronis’ Canadian content is Abdelmonem, Hassler, and Davis. Reports from Bryan Ray are indicating that the fourth Canadian is lock Reegan O’Gorman.
