MLR to Cancel Remainder of 2020 Season

On March 12, 2020, Major League Rugby announced that they would be suspending the season for 30 days. The original plan seemed to be to return on April 11th and continue to play out the remainder of the 2020 schedule as originally designed. Perhaps makeup games would have been sprinkled in as well.

Unfortunately, a lot can change in just 6 days. The circumstances surrounding COVID-19 change drastically. Soon after MLR suspended the season, the CDC recommended no gatherings of over 50 people for 8 weeks or twice as long as the MLR suspension.

Schools have been closed, most people are working from home, bars are shut down, movie theatres are closed, restaurants are limited to just take-out or delivery, and the border is closed. COVID-19 is a global pandemic and many states and provinces have been declaring a state of emergency.

Every day, it looks like COVID-19 is getting worse and worse. The number of cases and deaths continues to rise. With that, it’s difficult to argue against this decision. However, that does not make it less of a bummer. These are tough times for people all around the globe. Many people often use sports as an outlet to help them get through difficult times.

Unfortunately, we cannot do that now. COVID-19 makes it dangerous to hold sporting events. The safety of the athletes, coaches, workers, fans and the general public is significantly more important than the games. So, practice social distancing, wash your hands and be respectful of your fellow human beings. Hopefully, we will all be able to get back to doing what we love soon.

MLR will officially announce the cancellation of the 2020 season on Thursday morning. If you need your rugby fix; MLR 2020: Virtual will kick off on Friday, March 20th at 7 pm on Twitch.
