UFC Vegas 23: Holland vs Vettori Predictions
Source: Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC
For a main event that was put together on whim it certainly has some heat to it. It was just a few weeks ago that Kevin Holland was being pushed to the moon because of his unique personality (which oddly enough he is now being criticized for), but now he's in a tough spot as a fill in for Darren Till against a surging Marvin Vettori. The Italian is no stranger when it comes to drama, so it should be no surprise that there is no love loss.
The rest of the card looks fairly solid, so let's dive into some predictions!
Kevin Holland vs Marvin Vettori
Was Kevin Holland exposed when Derek Brunson took advantage of his less than stellar takedown defence? Sure seems like that's the consensus. I'm not saying that Holland didn't take that fight seriously, but he sure seemed to take the talking to the next level. I like it, but sometimes you gotta read the room. However, with Vettori across from him, there seems to be a genuine distaste there, so we'll see how that plays into the antics.
But like I said, the consensus is that holland has no ground game and has no takedown defence, do I believe that? No. He knocked out Jacare from his back, but I will say he will certainly be in a dog fight against Vettori. To me, it really depends on how the Italian wildman wants to play it. Does he want to stand and chase Holland down? Or, does he wish to grind him out the way Brunson did? I think there is an easy answer here.
I like Holland, I like his style, his personality, I like it all. I hope we don't lose "Big Mouth" to some twitter pushback. But when push comes to shove, I don't know if Vettori is the guy I wanna be running my comedy set by.
Prediction: Marvin Vettori, Decision
Arnold Allen vs Sodiq Yusuff
This is the fight of the night for me. Allen has quite an underrated resume, and all Yusuff does is put on entertaining fights (and wins). I think Allen is the more well-rounded fighter, but Yusuff has the clear power edge between the two. It's a close one to call, but I think if Yusuff can keep the fight standing and land some clean shots early it may be enough to push Allen in a corner. Should be a fantastic fight either way.
Prediction: Sodiq Yusuff, Decision
Sam Alvey vs Julian Marquez
This is a tough matchup for Alvey who is quite clearly on his last legs in the UFC. Marquez is a big, powerful dude who is durable as hell and can end the fight in a variety of ways. Should be entertaining while it lasts, but my money's on the future Mr. Miley Cyrus.
Prediction: Julian Marquez, 2ND RD TKO
Mackenzie Dern vs Nina Nunes
It's been a long layoff for Nina (for obvious reasons) so I don't know how the ring rust will affect her. However, if there was ever a way to bring some more shine to the family name - if it's possible - it would be with a win over the rising star in Dern. Dern has improved on her stand-up but we know where her talent lies. I would be shocked if she didn't work for a takedown immediately. I'm gonna go out on limb and ride with the specialist here.
Prediction: Mackenzie Dern, 2ND RD SUB
Mike Perry vs Daniel Rodriguez
Perry is obviously still a name that gets the attention of fight fans. Whether that's good or bad attention is up for debate, but what can't be debated is his heavy regression since making his UFC debut back in 2016. To me, this is almost a do or die fight for Perry. With a loss here I just can't imagine the promotion will continue to stand by his antics outside of the octagon.
However, this is a winnable fight for him. A new gym hopefully means a new Perry, but I guess we'll see.
Prediction: I'm a glutton for punishment, Mike Perry, 3RD RD TKO
